A common misunderstanding about Davos is that nothing happens without a badge. For most of the week, you do not need one. The official badge is for the Annual Meeting itself at the Congress Centre, it comes by invitation of the organisers, and it cannot be bought. A second kind, the hotel badge, covers a handful of secured hotels. In 2026 the rest of the town stayed open: Houses on the Promenade, receptions and side events run their own registration, and several have published that no badge is needed. The catch is that "no badge needed" rarely means you can simply walk in.
What is the official badge actually for?
The badge people usually mean is the participant badge for the Annual Meeting. It opens the Congress Centre and the official programme inside it. Participation is by invitation of the organisers, so it is not something you can apply for on a website or buy from an agency.
Some hosts call it the white badge. Cloudflare's 2026 listing, for example, said its late-night Piano Bar at Promenade 37 required the white badge for entry, while its House at Promenade 84A needed no badge at all (cloudflare.com, checked 22 October 2026).
If someone offers to sell you an official badge, treat it as a warning sign. In January 2026 Semafor reported that USA House had warned about fake passes.
The official programme also has a public side. In 2026 more than 200 sessions were livestreamed on the organisers' event page and YouTube channel (organisers' 2026 programme guide).
Hotel badges and the secured zone
During the 2026 meeting the cantonal police closed off several areas. The security zones covered the Congress Centre with the Congress Hotel, the Hotel Hilton and the Kurpark, and the areas around the Belvédère, the AlpenGold hotel, the ice stadium and the Lago heliport. The order ran from 18:00 on Sunday 18 January to 06:00 on Friday 23 January 2026 at the latest. Entry needed "the appropriate documentation", for groups such as accredited participants, residents, hotel residents, staff and people holding a police permit (cantonal police security zone FAQ 2026).
The hotel badge is the other way into those secured hotels. A 2023 assessment by the US State Department's Overseas Security Advisory Council set out how it worked that year: to enter the secured hotels you needed either an Annual Meeting badge or a hotel badge, hotel badges were registered through the secured hotels and issued by the police, and a hotel badge did not open the Congress Centre (OSAC, 2023).
Hosts at those hotels spell this out in their invitations. Semafor's 2026 media party in the Vinothek at the Grandhotel Belvédère told guests that events at the hotel required an official or hotel badge. It took no registrations on the door and asked for photo ID matching the registered name (Semafor event page).
Badge registration takes time and can go wrong. In January 2026 Semafor also reported that more than half of the 300 people registered for one side event did not receive badges on the opening Monday.
Everything else stayed reachable. The 2026 police FAQ said all other hotels, shops and businesses could be reached without restriction and that there were no general travel restrictions. It also warned of checks on people, vehicles and luggage on every road into Davos, with possible waiting times (cantonal police FAQ 2026, in German).
What is open during Davos week without a badge?
Most of what fills the week happens outside the zones: Houses on the Promenade, company lounges, media stages, receptions and dinners. Each one sets its own access, and the published rules vary more than first-time visitors expect. Some are open to anyone during set hours. Some need no badge but ask you to register for each session. Some are invite-only even though they sit outside the security zone.
The examples below come from each organiser's own page, checked on 22 October 2026. For most of these hosts the 2027 rules are not published yet, so the 2026 rule is shown where that is all there is. Read it as the type of access to expect from that host, not a promise for 2027.
| Venue | Edition | Where | Published access rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Haus | 2026 | Promenade 84A | "Badge not required for entry"; meetings by request, talks by registration |
| Climate Hub Davos | 2026 | Kulturplatz, Promenade 58C | Free entry; foyer open to everyone at set hours; free registration per session |
| The Hub Davos | 18 to 21 January 2027 | Five minutes on foot from Davos Platz station | No hotel badge needed, as it is outside the security zone; invite-only, apply per session |
| FQ Lounge @ Davos | 18 to 22 January 2027 | Consensus venue, address not published | "No conference badge required"; complimentary passes through a Consensus account |
| AI House Davos | 2026 | Davos | Its own Innovators and Local Champions badges, by application |
| Barry's Piano Bar | 2026 | Promenade 37 | Official white badge required |
| Semafor media party | 21 January 2026 | Grandhotel Belvédère | Official or hotel badge required; no registration on the door |
Two of these are worth reading closely. Cloudflare's House needed no badge, but its talks had registration links and the first one was full with a waiting list. The Hub Davos sits outside the zone yet is invite-only, and each confirmed registration covers only the session it was issued for. So read each listing for two separate answers: whether you need a badge, and whether you need to be on a list.
What is not open
- The Congress Centre and the official programme inside it, without an official badge.
- Events inside the secured hotels, which need an official or hotel badge registered in advance. In 2026 that meant hotels such as the Belvédère and the AlpenGold.
- Private dinners, roundtables and invite-only sessions, wherever they are held.
- Venues that tie entry to the official badge, such as the Piano Bar in 2026.
- Anything sold as an official badge outside the organisers' own process.
What is different for 2027
The Open Forum is gone. It had been the simplest answer to "what can I attend without a badge": in 2026 it ran 10 free panel discussions in the auditorium of the Swiss Alpine School, open to everyone (organisers' 2026 page). On 15 September 2026 the organisers discontinued it after 23 editions since 2003, citing the pressure the growing number of events puts on the town. The same notice mentions a raffle for a one-day Congress Centre badge for locals from Davos-Klosters (organisers' update).
Space for temporary venues may also be tighter. The municipality said in April 2026 that if more than 125 applications for temporary builds arrive for 2027, they will be assessed on a points system. In 2026, 132 projects with medium or large building work went up (swissinfo.ch).
The Annual Meeting is listed for 18 to 22 January 2027 (davos.ch). As of 22 October 2026 the cantonal police had not published 2027 security zones, and many Houses had not published 2027 access rules. Until they do, the 2026 arrangements above are a reference, not a rule for 2027.
How do you plan a Davos week without an official badge?
Start from what you want out of the week, then find the rooms where those people will be. For each event on your list, read the organiser's own page for three things: whether it is inside a secured hotel, whether it needs registration or an invitation, and when registration closes.
- Say yes early to anything at a secured hotel. Hotel badges are registered in advance and some hosts take no registrations on the door, so a late reply can leave you without one.
- Register with the name on your passport or ID card, and carry it. Hosts may check it at the door.
- Leave time for the drive in and between venues, given the road checks described above.
- Choose where you stay with your meetings in mind. Where you stay in Davos decides how far you walk between them.
We have worked Davos weeks since 2018. One part of that work is access to receptions and private events chosen around what a client wants from the week. Official participation is not something we, or any agency, can sell. The free Davos 2027 planner tracks 181 events as of 22 October 2026, 72 of them with 2027 dates published, and is updated weekly until the end of December, then daily in January.
If an invitation does not say whether you need a badge, ask the host before you travel. It is a normal question in Davos, and the answer decides whether you get through the door.
